How to crop a picture (e.g. screenshot) using MSPaint only

This post is a response to one of my friend’s question on how to crop a part of a picture using Microsoft Paint only.

1. Launch mspaint.exe by pressing Windows+R and keying in “mspaint” followed by the Enter key.

For Screenshot:
2. Move your mouse pointer to the lower right-hand corner of the canvas (the editable white area). The cursor will turn into a black handle. Drag the area until it becomes quite small.
3. Now press Ctrl+V to paste your screenshot. The canvas will automatically expand to the size of your screenshot.

For Picture file:
2. Press Ctrl+O. The Open dialog box opens.
3. Browse to your picture and double-click to open.

4. Now, click the Select tool (the one that looks like a dotted rectangle).

5. Using the mouse pointer (which is now in the shape of a crosshair), select the rectangular area you require by pressing down the left mouse button over one of the corners of the desired area. Drag the mouse pointer towards the corner of the desired area that is diagonally opposite the one you have just selected. Release the left mouse button.

6. Press Ctrl+X to cut out the desired area.

7. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to 3 under ‘For Screenshot’ (another instance of Paint).

8. Save your cropped picture and close your original one (without saving).
